Abstract

547,823. Machinery guards. HERBERT, Ltd., A., and BERRY, J. W. March 11, 1941, No. 3283. [Class 80 (iv)] [Also in Group XXII] A chuck guard for a lathe or other machine tool is arranged so that when it is moved to an inoperative position it actuates a valve controlling the supply of coolant. In a frictionallysupported guard such as that described in Specification 480,716 a stationary headstock portion 12 above the chuck 11 has keyed therein a shaft 14 supporting a sleeve 19 to which are secured the supporting fingers 18 of the tiltable front guard 17. The rear guard is carried by fingers 16, engaging round shaft 14. Coolant is supplied by a pipe 24 to a central bore 23 in the shaft 14 and thence to the operative position of the guard through registering slots 21, 22, to the work. When the guard is raised the slots are out of register and the coolant supply is cut off. The guards are frictionally supported, to maintain them in any set position, by friction washers 29, 35, the resistance being adjustable by a.nut 27.
