Abstract

553,567. Lathes. WICKMAN Ltd., A. C., and DIXON, R. J. Oct. 25, 1941, No. 13746. [ Class 83 (iii)] Hollow spindle lathes of the type in which the stock is fed, through a steady located close to the tools, by traversing the headstock, have an auxiliary gripping device to avoid buckling of the stock. The bracket f mounts a rotary spindle 3 carrying a steady rest in the form of a split collet i adjustable by a cap j to the work diameter. An extension 4 of the spindle carries levers 8 actuating a sleeve 7, for a bevel closed collet 5, as controlled by a collar 10 traversed by a cam lever operated yoke. Side lugs on the extension 4 carry rods sliding in bores in lugs carried by the lathe spindle c. In a modification separate brackets are employed for the steady rest and gripping device to enable a non rotating steady to be employed.
