Abstract

546,764. Silver-antimony alloy. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. March 28, 1941, No. 4212. Convention date, March 28, 1940. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XL] A photo electric cathode which is irresponsive to red and infra-red rays is obtained by forming a film of a silver-antimony alloy on a glass support and then depositing a caesium layer on the alloy. The alloy contains from 17 per cent. to 13 per cent. antimony and the layers are thin enough to transmit 30 per cent. to 53 per cent. incident light or the alloy layer may be opaque and form a mosaic. The cµsium is applied without prior oxidation of the alloy but a small amount of oxygen may be applied to the layer for a very short time, to improve the action of the cathode in its colour response. As applied to an image intensifier the photo cathode is formed on a glass wall W of the tube by (1) vaporizing alloy pellets 7 by means of a filament 6 and (2) vaporizing cµsium pellets 9 from the side tube 8. Lens elements 2, 3, 4 and an anode 5 direct the electron image on the fluorescent screen S ; a gap 14 in the element 4 allows the caesium to flow freely from the side tube. Specification 488,920, [Group XL], is referred to.
