Abstract
1,034,523. Signal storage tubes; semiconductor electrodes. RAULAND CORPORATION. March 29, 1963 [March 29, 1962], No. 12506/63. Headings H1D and H1K. A signal storage tube has a composite storage screen comprising a first fluorescent layer, a second P.-C. (photo-conductive) layer and a third layer exhibiting B.I.C. (electron bombardment induced conductivity). As described, the screen comprises (a) a wiremesh support 34, (b) a thin layer of fluorescent material 36 evaporated on to it (e.g. zinc sulphide, cadmium sulphide, cadmium selenide, aluminium oxide activated by aluminium), (c) a photo-conductive layer 37 which also exhibits B.I.C., e.g. barium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, antimony trisulphide, (d) a thin layer of aluminium foil 35. Alternatives:- (i) Fig. 2 (not shown), a thin conductive transparent layer 50 of gold bismuth oxide is positioned between layers 36, 37 to maintain potential on rear of layer 37. (ii) Fig. 3 (not shown), separate layers 51, 52 are used for P.C. and B.I.C. (iii) Fig. 4 (not shown), the mesh 34 is in the middle of the assembly with aluminium and phosphor layers 35, 36 facing the writing gun and layers 37, 50 facing reading gun. (iv) Fig. 5 (not shown), a semi-conductor screen comprises (a) a one-micron thick layer of zinc sulphide evaporated on to aluminium foil and doped by evaporation of 10<SP>-3</SP> to 10<SP>-4</SP>% of copper, gallium or indium to be fluorescent with a long after-glow, (b) a further layer of zinc sulphide evaporated on to it and doped with 0À1 to 1À0% of copper thermally diffused throughout the layer to exhibit photo-conductivity, (c) a final layer of zinc sulphide having an inherent bombardment-inducedconductivity property. (v) Fig. 6 (not shown), a layer 61 of aluminium oxide activated by aluminium to emit ultra-violet radiation may be used as the support and to take the place of the fluorescent layer.
