Abstract

729,521. Luminescent screens. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 24, 1953 [March 29, 1952], No. 5109/53. Class 39 (1). A fluorescent screen for an X-ray image intensifier comprises a first layer of ZnS activated with Ag, a second layer of ZnS activated with Mn for quenching the afterglow of the first layer, and a photo-emissive coating of caesiated antimony superposed on the first layer. It is suggested that the X-rays may be replaced by radiation of different wavelength. The red or infra-red light emitted by the second layer which is excited partly by the X-rays and partly by the blue light emitted by the zinc sulphide-silver phosphor, releases the stored energy from the latter phosphor so that afterglow cannot occur. The screen comprises lime glass layer 1, Fig. 2, shaped as a watch glass, layer 2 of ZnS-Mn, layer 3 of ZnS-Ag, conductive layer 25, and photoemissive layer 27. Layer 27 of caesium-antimony responds only to the blue light from layer 3. Layer 25 may alternatively be non-conductive, e.g. of glass similar to the glass mixed with layer 3, or may be omitted if layer 27 is sufficiently conductive. The output fluorescent screen 13 is a zinc cadmium sulphide layer covered with an aluminium layer.
