Abstract

546,743. Tyre yarns &c. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., DUNLOP COTTON MILLS, Ltd., ANDERSON, J., and LANGSTRETH, M. Dec. 26, 1940, No. 18140. [Class 120 (iii)] A yarn for incorporation with rubber in tyres &c. is formed by twisting a cotton roving to a high degree, i.e. with a twist factor or multiplier of at least 9, and without draft and then twisting together a number of such rovings in the same or in the opposite directions; water or a solution of wetting agents may be applied at any stage in the manufacture and the yarn may be subsequently stretched. In an example a cotton roving of 4.5 hank and twist of 3.6 turns per inch is twisted to 22 turns per inch while a solution of a wetting agent is applied before the roving reaches the delivery rollers of the twister; 3 of the rovings are then twisted together 8 turns per inch and stretched until the yarn has an extension of the order of 9 per cent. at 10 lbs.
