[Class 35] A horse-shoe permanent magnet of high coercive force (for use, for example, as an electric motor brake) consists of a horse-shoe of cobalt steel with a gap wider than the final gap so that its faces may be ground flat by means of a relatively thick and robust grinding wheel, an additional piece of magnetic material being held magnetically or otherwise to one of the pole pieces to reduce the gap to the size desired. The additional piece may be clamped or bolted to one of the poles and it may be of iron or of high coercive steel like the main magnet itself.
