[Class 37.] A strip of soft iron or other magnetic material d, secured to a non-magnetic pivoted needle B, is arranged symmetrically between the poles a<1>, a<2> of a horseshoe electromagnet energized by coils A<1>, A<2>. The strip d is magnetized by induction from a permanent magnet D, one pole of which is adjacent to the central portion of the strip. By this arrangement the ends of the strip are of similar polarity with a consequent pole in the centre, and the movable system is deflected in a direction dependent on the direction of the current in the windings A<1>, A<2>. The needle B is pivoted in two small plates c<2> secured to the polepieces a,<1> a<2> and is provided with a counterweight b to bring it to its central position when the electromagnet is de-energized.
