Abstract

956,069. Permanent magnets. SWIFT LEVICK & SONS Ltd. March 13, 1963 [March 17, 1962], No. 10312/62. Heading H1P. The polepieces for a nuclear magnetic resonance magnet comprise a body of soft iron which is recessed to receive an insert of material capable of higher saturation than soft iron. The magnet assembly 4 comprising segments of permanent magnet material has a tiltable polepiece A which consists of a soft iron body 6 and a circular insert 10 of cobalt iron which has a higher saturation than soft iron. The insert fits tightly into the recess 9 and the taper on body 6 extends into the face of the insert. The polepieces are spaced from the magnet assembly 4 by air gap 8 and polepiece A can be adjusted so that pole faces 13 are exactly parallel; the wedge adjustment disclosed in Specification 946,430 may be used to do this. A cobalt-iron composed of Co 49%, Fe 49%, Va 2% may be used for the insert, its saturation intensity being 24,000 gauss.
