[Class 80 (ii,)] The wiper is carried by a resilient arm which is mounted on an oscillating shaft 4 and comprises an inner end section 8 to which is pivoted at 19 a channelled sheet-metal stamping 18 into which is telescoped a leaf spring 20. The shaft 4 carries a fluted head 5 which receives a fluted socket on the end section 8 thus providing a means of adjusting the position of the wiper on the windscreen. The end wall of the socket may be formed as a separate plate 10 secured by a rivet 19 or may be cast with the socket. The section 18 is held from axial movement by a spring latch 13 which is accommodated in a groove 12. In a modification, Fig. 6, the latch is mounted exteriorly of the socket between the side walls 27 of the inner end section. These side walls have outwardly flaring holes 28, Figs. 7, 8, in which are pivoted the trunnions 29 of the spring-wire. latch. This has parallel legs 30 which at their outer ends have a pair of keeper parts 31 which overhang the wall of the socket and engage behind the fluted head 5<SP>11</SP>. A handle 32 enables the keeper parts to be disengaged. The latch is held in its operative position by ribs 33. In a further modification, the fluted head 5 is removable to permit of the shaft passing through a small opening in the cowl. In Fig. 2, the spring 20 passes over a keeper pin 21 and its free inner end 24 rests on a bearing 22 and thus not only resists outward swinging of the arm but holds the wiper under correct pressure; it also tends to cant the socket of the end section 8 on the head 5 to produce a binding action.
