433,731. Windscreen - wipers. SOC. ANON. POUR L'EQUIPEMENT ELECTRIQUE DES VEHICULES, 26, Rue Guynamer, Issy-les-Moulineaux, Seine, France. Feb. 23, 1934, No. 5993. Convention date, Dec. 23, 1933. [Class 138 (i)] A windscreen-wiper has a cylindrical driving shaft provided near one end with a groove or the like engaged by spring-pressed means coupling the shaft to a socket carrying the wiper blade, the spring yielding to disengage the coupling when a force greater than that exerted by the driving motor is exerted on the wiper blade. In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the wiper shaft 1 is formed with a longitudinal groove 1<a> and with a flat portion 1<b> and is adapted to be connected to a socket 4 by means of a spring 9 and a key 8. The spring bears at one end against an adjustable screw 11 in the socket and at the other end bears against the flat portion 1<b> on the shaft 1. The key 8 engages the groove 1<a>. The socket 4 is formed with an aperture 7 of oval form to facilitate attachment to the shaft 1, and is pivotally connected to a casing 3 carrying the wiper arm 2. A spring 6 presses the wiper against the screen. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the key 8 and groove 1<a> are dispensed with and the shaft 1 is formed with a flat portion 1<e> to receive one end of the spring 9. A cylindrical member may be interposed between the spring and the portion 1<e>. In a further construction shown in Fig. 6, the end of the shaft 1 has a groove 1f engaged by a projection 13 on a member 12 interposed between the spring 9 and the shaft. In a further construction shown in Fig. 7, the shaft 1 has a groove 1<a> for engagement by a projection 14 forming an integral part of the socket 4.
