Abstract

545,670. Hydraulic brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and PARNELL, F. G. Dec. 31,1940, No. 18257. [Class 103 (i)] Braking systems for vehicles shown in Fig. 1 have one set of brakes operated by a master cylinder 10, and another set operated at the same time by pressure means, such as a pump 44 and accumulator 19, delivering pressure fluid through a pedal-controlled valve 18, Fig. 2, to an outlet leading to the brake cylinders, part of the same supply actuating a piston 15 for operating the master piston of cylinder 10. A lever 24 pivoted at its mid-point to the rod between the piston 15 and the master piston is connected to a pedal 27 and to the valve 18 so that either pressure system may be directly operated by the pedal if the other fails. Fig. 4 shows a master cylinder 53 with its piston 52 having integral with it a piston 51 receiving pressure to operate the piston 52 from a circulating system of the kind described in Specification 545,667. Until the pedal advances the thrust-rod 77 to move forward a plunger 57 to close the valve 73, 74 fluid from a pump enters a cylinder behind the master'cylinder through a port 64 and passes through the valve into a central passage in the plunger 57 and out to exhaust through port 65; as in the form shown in Fig. one set of brakes additional to one operated by the master cylinder is operated from the pressure supply used to actuate the master cylinder. In vehicles having more than two pairs of wheels a "tandem" master cylinder, such as that described in Specification 446,364, may be used for operating two sets of brakes. An exhauster to create a vacuum may be used instead of a source of pressure.
