Abstract

1,108,568. Fluid pressure operated brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 30 June, 1965 [14 July, 1964], No. 28931/64. Heading F2F. In a booster and. auxiliary master cylinder unit for an hydraulic braking system of the kind in which a piston 24 in the auxiliary master cylinder 21 is actuated by the booster, the energization of which is controlled through valves carried by a T-shaped rocking lever 28 which is engaged by a differential control piston 29 acted upon at one end by hydraulic pressure from a pedal-operated master cylinder and at the other end by hydraulic pressure generated in the auxiliary master cylinder, an axial passage 34 in the control piston 29 is closed by a valve 35 when the control piston moves away from a stationary abutment 39. As shown fluid pressure from a pedal operated tandem master cylinder is connected to a port 33 of the auxiliary master cylinder. Prior to operation of the brakes, the control piston 29 is urged leftwards by a spring 38 so that the valve 35 is open and fluid from the tandem master cylinder may pass through the control piston directly to the slave cylinders of the brakes. When fluid is supplied to the inlet 33, the hydraulic pressure moves the control piston 29 rightwards, closing the valve 35 and actuating the rocking lever 28, which forms part of a valve assembly of the type disclosed in Specification 786,524, to operate the booster and generate pressure in the pressure space 21 of the auxiliary master cylinder. This pressure is communicated to the store cylinders of the brakes and also acts on the small end of the differential piston 29 in opposition to the force exerted by the pressure on the large end of the control piston. In a braking system using the booster (Fig. 1, not shown) the front wheel brakes are operated by pressure from the booster and the rear wheel brake, which have store cylinders (13) larger in diameter than the front wheel brake cylinders 18, are operated directly from the master cylinder 10. A spring-loaded valve 42 may be inserted in the line 17 from the booster to prevent the front wheel brakes being actuated until a predetermined pressure is reached.
