1,093,346. Fluid-pressure brakes. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES and M. TAUSEND, [trading as ALFRED TEVES MASCHINENUND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM GES]. Nov. 11, 1965 [Feb. 20, 1965], No. 47906/65. Heading F2F. A valve forming part of a vehicle hydraulic braking system which includes both friction brakes and a hydrodynamic retarder comprises a piston 14 acted on both by a spring 18 and by pressure at an inlet 15 from a master cylinder 4 (Fig. 1, not shown) to urge it against a stop member 30 which as a result props open a spring- loaded valve 26 in the piston allowing the fluid to flow via outlet 16 to brake cylinders associated with the rear axle 2 of the vehicle (the valve being marked 12 in Fig. 1, not shown), and further comprises a plunger 17 in contact with the piston and which is acted on by the torque reaction of the hydrodynamic retarder 7 (Fig. 1, not shown) via a lever 11 (Fig. 1), so that when the retarder reaction is high plunger 17 moves the piston 14 to the left in opposition to the inlet pressure and spring 18 to cause valve 26 to close and limit the pressure supplied to the rear brakes. The brakes of the vehicle front axle 1 (Fig. 1, not shown) are supplied direct from the master cylinder, the latter also being connected by a line 10 to the control chamber of a relay valve 10a which controls the flow of fluid from an accumulator 9 to the retarder 7. The valve 10a can also be manually operated to operate the retarder without the friction brakes being operated.
