Abstract

1,110,873. Braking system. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 19 July, 1965, [17 July, 1964], No. 29348/64. Heading F2E and F2F. A fluid pressure braking system for vehicles comprises hydraulically operated brakes 3 for one set or sets of wheels and pneumatically operated brakes for a further set 2 or sets of wheels, a pedal operated tandem master cylinder 6 having a primary chamber connected to the hydraulic circuit of the hydraulically operated brakes, an air pressure servo unit 15 for providing power assistance to the hydraulically operated brakes, first and second sources 19, 51 of compressed air connected to the pneumatic circuit of the pneumatically operated brakes and valve means 31, 32 jointly operable hydraulically by the master cylinder, operation of the first valve 31 resulting in actuation of the servodevice to provide power assistance to the hydraulic brake, operation of the second valve 32 connecting the air brakes to the second source. Fluid from the primary chamber 8 of the master cylinder 6 passes direct by line 29, 25, 26 to the hydraulic brake cylinders 3, and by line 43 to the space 42 between a floating piston 38 and a piston 39 operating valve 31. The secondary chamber 11 is connected, by line 45 to a similar space 44 between the floating piston 38 and a piston 40 operating valve 32. Operation of the master cylinder results in the opening of both valves, the valve 31 then connecting lines 47, 48 to allow compressed air from primary reservoir 19 to operate the servomotor 15 to augment through line 25 the pressure to brake cylinders 3, and further connecting lines 47, 49 to supply the smaller chambers 46 of the tandem air brake cylinders 4, 5. The operation of valve 32 connects the line 53 of secondary reservoir 51 to line 54 leading to the larger chambers 56 of the cylinders 4, 5. Valve 32 is also operable, by a cable 59, from a hand brake 57, 58. The master cylinder has a common plug 14 for bleeding the primary and secondary circuits. The specification gives examples of the braking efficiencies available when certain sections of the system are rendered inoperative. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the pistons 39, 40 are of different diameters. The application of the system to a tractor - trailer combination with hydraulic brakes and air brakes on the tractor, the trailer having air brakes, is described with reference to figures 3 and 4 (not shown).
