Abstract

1,148,271. Brake systems; brake indicators. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 16 Oct., 1967, No. 47099/67. Addition to 1,110,873. Headings F2E and F2F. A vehicle braking system, Fig. 1, comprises: hydraulically operated brakes for one set of wheels 1; pneumatically operated brakes for another set of wheels 2; a single master cylinder 11 operated by a pedal; an air pressure servounit 13 for the hydraulic brakes; and valves 12 actuated by the master cylinder for connecting two pressure sources 25, 26 to the servo-unit 13 and the pneumatic brakes 2. The servo-unit 13 has an hydraulic fluid inlet 37 coupled to the master cylinder 11, and fluid pressure is transmitted to two outlets 39, 43 by a stepped piston 32. The two outlets may operate on single brake cylinders 3 or on separate cylinders (84, 85), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). The pressure on the two outlet lines is equalized by a compensator 50, which also actuates an indicator, via switch 59, if pressure in one or other of the lines 40, 44 fails. Servo assistance is provided by a double diaphragm unit having two chambers 17, 18 connected via the valves 12 to the air reservoirs 25, 26. The diaphragms may be replaced by pistons, Figs. 2, 4 (not shown). In one form of master cylinder, Fig. 5, the two valves units 12 are mounted side-by-side and comprise valves 139 which normally engage fixed seatings 141. Actuation of the master cylinder piston 119 hydraulically actuates pistons 136 to close seatings 138 on to the valves 139 and thus move them away from the fixed seatings 141. In the event of failure of the hydraulic action of piston 119 the valves are mechanically actuated via member 143. The valves may also be actuated by the hand brake via rods 147. In an alternative arrangement, the valve units 12 are mounted in tandem, Figs. 2, 4 (not shown).
