Abstract
837,576. Fluid-pressure brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. Dec. 1, 1958 [Dec. 10, 1957; Jan. 14, 1958], Nos. 38374/57 and 1330/58. Class 103 (1). A fluid pressure-operated servo-assisted braking apparatus of the type disclosed in Specification 550,540, comprises two independent hydraulic systems for operating separate brakes and each embodying an auxiliary cylinder 11, 12, combined into a unit or mounted for common actuation by servomotor 1, 2, and a pedal operated dual transmitter 25 incorporating two master cylinders connected, respectively, by lines 26, 27 to auxiliary cylinders 11, 12, the pressures in lines 26, 27 being each transmitted to the hydraulic motor 33, 34 for actuating the control valve 5, so that a degree of braking control is retained irrespective of failure in either system. Actuation of transmitter 25, comprising two parallel or in-line master cylinders, creates pressure in chambers 28, 29 to advance pistons 13, 19 to actuate both sets of brakes. The pressure also acts via passages 45, 44 and 46, in chambers 41, 36 of valve 5, the pressure on piston 33 being balanced to maintain the piston in the shown position whilst piston 34 is moved to operate valve 5 to admit air through pipe 4 to the rear of the vacuum suspended piston 2 which moves piston 13 through rod 14 to boost pressure in cylinder 11, which pressure is transmitted to cylinder 12 by floating piston 15, rod 20 and piston 19. Should a leak occur on the output side of cylinder 11, then pressure in line 26 passes through piston 13 via ball valve 13a, the piston remaining stationary; pressure in lines 27, 45 operates cylinder 12 and valve 5 to actuate motor 1, 2 which displaces piston 13 until it abuts piston 15 to transmit the output of motor 1, 2 mechanically to cylinder 12. Should a leak occur on the output side of cylinder 10, then piston 13 will be operated but no pressure created in cylinder 11 due to yielding of piston 15 because of absence of pressure in cylinder 12, fluid in front of piston 15 escaping through passage 47 and lines 48 and 26; when piston 15 abuts the end of cylinder 11 the piston 13 operates normally. The pressure in chamber 36 actuates piston 34 through piston 33 and spacer 40 to actuate valve 5. Should a leak occur on the input side of either cylinder 11 or 12 then the other cylinder and system is operated as above. Movement of piston 13 is transmitted to piston 15 by liquid pressure in cylinder 11 but in the first Provisional Specification this movement is transmitted by a rod and lostmotion connection between the pistons 13, 15.
