Abstract

835,970. Fluid pressure brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. Nov. 27, 1958 [Dec. 9, 1957], No. 38216/57. Class 103 (1). A power-operated braking apparatus for vehicles, consists of two independent systems operating separate sets of brakes, each system comprising a vacuum or compressed air reservoir 1, la feeding a vacuum or compressed air operated servo-. device 3, 3a, hydraulic means 6, 6a for transmitting movements of the movable member of the servo-device to the actuating means 8, 8a of the brakes, valve means 5, 5a controlling the servodevice and an hydraulic transmission through which movements of a foot pedal P are transmitted to valve means 5, 5a, each transmission including a master cylinder, the two master cylinders being included in a unit D for common actuation by pedal P. In the apparatus described, the servo - devices 3, 3a, Fig. 2 (not shown), are of the vacuum suspended type, the ends of each device being connected by a pipe 4, 4a through the valve 5, 5a, the two reservoirs 1, 1a being evacuated by a common exhauster E. The unit D, Fig. 3, comprises two pistons 20, 20a actuated by pedal P through roller 26, cap 35, compression spring 23, plunger 21, bridge 22 and plungers 27, 27a to displace fluid into conduits 19, 19a. If one system fails, the other remains operative. An alternative unit D, Fig. 4, comprises spaced coaxial pistons 28, 28a in a cylinder 29 having outlets 30, 31 to conduits 19, 19a, respectively. The pedal P actuates piston 28 through roller 26, cap 34, spring 35, plate 36 and plunger 37 to displace fluid through port 30, the piston 28a being moved hydraulically to displace fluid through port 31. A reservoir 40 arranged concentrically of the cylinder 29 supplies fluid to the master cylinders through ports 41, 41a, the reservoir being divided into two by radial ribs 42 for independent supplies. Should a failure occur in the system operated by piston 28, then the piston 28a will be moved mechanically through piston 28 and abutments 32, 32a; if the other system fails then piston 28a yields freely to a limit position.
