Abstract

1,126,065. Fluid pressure brakes; valves. ATKINSON VEHICLES Ltd. 15 June, 1966 [19 June, 1965], No. 26021/65. Headings F2F and F2V. A braking system for a mechanically propelled vehicle having separate fluid lines each of which operates a different group of brakes includes a relay valve 45 connected to at least one group of brakes to enable operation thereof by any one of at least two other groups of brakes. A pressure responsive relay valve actuator is also provided having a plurality of mechanically coupled diaphragms 47, 53, 59, each diaphragm being in communication with the fluid line leading to a respective one of the other groups of brakes, and the diaphragms being coupled to a common means 45b for actuating the relay valve 45 from any one of the diaphragms 47, 53, 59. The valve actuator and relay valve assembly is substituted for two conventional double check valves in a known arrangement of a dual line air pressure safety system (Fig. 1, not shown). The invention is particularly concerned with tractor/trailer vehicles, the relay valve actuating the trailer brakes. In the construction of Fig. 1, the tractor is provided with two separate braking circuits each having a brake valve, the valves being actuated by a common brake pedal. One circuit feeds the front brake cylinders and the other the rear wheel cylinders. Each circuit is supplied with compressed air from its own portion of a divided reservoir which is fed from a compressor. A hand control valve is also provided which is fed from an auxiliary reservoir; operation of this valve actuates the relay valve 45 through one of its diaphragms.
