Abstract
545,069. Sparking plugs. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 24, 1941, No. 7917. Convention date, July 3, 1940. Addition to 494,701. [Class 7 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXXVI] The central electrode 26 of a spark plug is sealed in the bore of the insulator 10 by means of a fused mixture of glass and metal, the portion 21 of the seal being made of glass of greater plasticity than that of which the portion 17 is made. In assembling, separate pellets of the two kinds of mixtures are placed between the head 16 of the lower part of the electrode and the threaded lower end of the upper part of the electrode, and after the parts have been heated to soften the pellets they are forced into position as shown. The lower part of the electrode fits the bore closely and the upper part loosely. The pellets are preferably made of boro-silicate glass together with copper, iron, cobalt, nickel, tungsten or molybdenum, with or without a binder which is driven off during sealing, specific examples of suitable proportions of each of these metals being given. The borosilicate glass may consist of 50 per cent. of B 2 O 3 , 20 per cent of PbO, and 30 per cent. of SiO 2 . The invention may be applied also to the one-piece electrodes shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the parent Specification and the insulator may be secured within the shell 41 by similar sealing means 40.
