545,022. Universe joints. HARRIS, C. W. Jan. 6, 1941, No. 170. [Class 80 (ii)] The intermediate member D which has grooves L, M, Fig. 5, therein at right-angles to one another, consists of a block which is produced by turning, e.g. a bar of steel about one axis F, G and then about a second axis H, K at right-angles thereto. The grooves are recessed at the bottom to receive beads O, Fig. 1, on tongues N of the driving and driven members C, E and these grooves and beads serve to hold the parts against axial separation. To enable the joint to be assembled, the grooves are cut away over an extent of about 120 degrees as at P, Fig. 1, 2, and the bead or lip O is made of a width, as shown at R, Fig. 1, that will permit it to enter the opening produced. Thus, the lip or bead is pushed into the cut-away part of the groove and then, with the block stationary, the driving and driven members are rotated through 180 degrees. The tongues are bevelled at S, T to avoid interference. Lubricant may be fed through holes W. In a modification a double joint is shown in Fig. 10, and this comprises 'two intermediate blocks connected by an extra centre piece V.
