Abstract
542,607. Valves and valve gear. KAMMER, G. S. July 16, 1940, No. 11781. [Class 7 (vi)] A sleeve valve is driven by a drag-link connecting two cranks of unequal length, one crank being driven by the engine, and the other connected to the valve, so that the downward or outward movement of the valve is more rapid than the inward movement. In this way a rapid opening of exhaust ports controlled by the upper edge of the valve, and of inlet ports controlled by corresponding ports in the valve and by the piston, can be obtained. Fig. 3 shows a crank disc 2 mounted on an engine-driven shaft 12 and having a crank pin 13 connected by a drag-link 3 to the crank pin 8 of a second crank disc 1, which carries a further crank pin 9 connected by a universal joint to the valve 11. The discs 1, 2 are mounted in roller bearings 4, 6 in the engine casing 5, 7. Fig. 6 shows a more compact form in which the disc 2 is driven by means of teeth 20 and is recessed to receive the drag-link 3, the crank 9 being diametrically opposite to the crank 8. The valve may be moved axially by a connecting-rod attached to the crank 9, the oscillating movement, if desired, being imparted by other means. Specifications 506,326 and 541,409 are referred to.
