Abstract

Fixed-abutment type with oscillating vanes; packing drums, vanes, abutments, and the like; governing and regulating motors and meters; bearings, arrangement of.-A rotary shaft, which is substantially at right angles to the oscillatory engine shaft, is driven through a universal joint coupling consisting of a trunnion supported in a member attached to the oscillating shaft and a. cranked lever which is transversely pivoted to the rotary shaft and is slidable in the trunnion The rotary shaft is adjustable axially to vary the angular travel of the oscillating vane pistons. Vanes 11 oscillate beteen abutments 12 which are cut away on the working-chamber periphery to permit of a large surface for the fuel inlet and exhaust valves 50. A member 20 which supports the spindles of the trunnion 26 is attached to the oscillating shaft 8 and motion is transmitted to a rotating shaft 30 through a cranked arm 32 one end of which slides in a hole 33 in the trunnion. A threaded rod 45 provides hand adjustment for moving a piece 42 which is fixed to a bearing 40 and the bearing together with the shaft 30 are moved axially by means of a handle 47. The long arm of the crank 32 thus moves in or out of the trunnion 26 and varies the angular travel of the vane pistons. A gear wheel 34 and its collar are splined on to shaft 30 and they are prevented from axial movement by means of an extension 48 of the frame 41. A gear-wheel 35 has cam surfaces which operate push-rods 52 for the valve gear rocker arms. A further gear-wheel 38 drives the magneto through a shaft 39. Ball bearings are provided for the various shafts. Spring-pressed packing strips 14 for the abutments 12, Fig. 3, which are mounted in channels 13, contain smaller packing strips 16 which are pressed against the oscillating shaft. The edges of the vanes have double packing strips 60 and 60a, Fig. 9, the outer edges having sliding joints 62 which are staggered in the two strips. Circular packing rings 63 and 65 are cut away in places to permit a pin attached to the vane piston to oscillate. The pin presses on these rings at each end of its travel. Strips 60 and 60a have soft metal pieces 70 inserted, Fig. 9.
