Abstract

1,155,429. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. G.R. STEWART. Nov.15,1966, No.51137/66. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I. C. engine of the kind comprising an annular cylinder within which is mounted on a coaxial drive shaft a pair of diametrically opposite "drive" pistons and intermittent the "drive" pistons on a tubular counter-shaft encircling the drive shaft a pair of diametrically opposite "compression" pistons and piston control means causing the "compression" pistons to rotationally oscillate with respect to the "drive" pistons during shaft rotation, includes means for selectivity adjusting the magnitude of the oscillatory movement to vary the compression ratio of the engine. As shown in Fig. 3, the piston control means comprises diametral lugs 132, 134 formed on the drive shaft 60, diametral lugs 142, 144 formed on the countershaft 70 and pairs of equal-armed levers connected to each lug. The ends of adjacent lever pairs are connected together by a pivot pin on which is mounted a roller to engage a cam track formed by parallel straight portions 120, 122 and arcuate portions 124, 126. The connection between each lug and its pair of levers comprises, for the lug 134, e.g., a pivot pin 170, Fig.5, formed with a rectangular head 172 slidable in a slot 174 in one lever 157 of the pair, a rectangular member 176 slidable in a slot 178 in the other lever 156 of the pair, spacers 182, 184 and a nut 180. The lug 134 is provided with three holes 135, 136, 137 in which the pivot pin 170 may be selectively positioned to vary the compression ratio of the engine. The engine may be liquid or air cooled. Lubricant under pressure is delivered to a stationary sleeve surrounding an extension to the drive shaft and passes through radial and axial passages in the drive shaft to lubricate relatively sliding contact faces between arms formed on the shafts 60, 70 to carry the pistons and also the pistons faces in contact with the annular cylinder.
