Abstract

542,112. Vehicle brakes. KIRKSTALL FORGE, Ltd., and COWELL, F. R. Nov. 14, 1940, Nos. 16492 and 17511. [Class 103 (i)] An internally-expanding brake comprises a pair of brake-shoe-carriers 12 moved outwardly to apply to the brake-drum a plurality of brake-shoes 26 on each of the carriers 12, which in the example shown in Fig. 1 are pivoted on adjustable anchor-pins 13 and moved outwardly by an expander 15. Each shoe is provided with supporting rollers 31, 32 running on a track 33 of the carrier 12 and the adjacent shoe-ends 38, which are at the middle of the carrier, meet the drum before the other ends which, are applied later by inclines 37 on the carrier tracks 33 tilting the shoes as these are moved round by the rotating drum. In a preferred form the inclines (which may be V-shaped so as to be effective for either direction of vehicle movement) for tilting the shoes are on the axle or other fixed part in order that the reaction may not be transmitted to the brake applying pedal.
