Abstract

540,329. Separating air from liquids. STEVENS, A. H. (Wayne Pump Co.). April 8, 1940, No. 6341. [Class 1 (i)] A device for separating air from liquids, particularly for use in conjunction with a pump in liquid dispensing apparatus comprises a main chamber 154 with inlet 20 and outlet 26, communicating by a restricted aperture 158 with a secondary chamber 160 which has a pressureoperated venting valve 164 and an outlet 186 for liquid. The aperture 158 is controlled by valve 176 operated by a float in the secondary chamber. The inlet of the main chamber is connected to the pressure side of the pump 14. The liquid return pipe 146 from the secondary chamber is connected to the inlet 142 of a sleeve valve, Fig. 6, mounted on the pump. The sleeve valve carries a piston 126 the opposite sides of which are subjected to the fluid pressures prevailing on the suction and pressure sides of the pump by means of passages 108, 110 respectively. While air is being pumped the sleeve valve remains closed, but when the liquid passing through the pump is air-free the pressure on the delivery side opens the valve allowing liquid accumulated in the chamber 160 to return to the suction side of the pump.
