[Classes 110 (i) and 110 (ii)] [See also Group XXVIII] In a pumping system in which, in order to effect priming, the pump 3, Fig. 1, is immersed in or connected to a container 2, into the upper part of which the suction pipe 10 opens, and air is withdrawn from the upper part of the container 2 by a pipe 14 connected to the pump intake pipe 4 below the suction valve 11, a choke 19 is inserted in the pipe 4 in order to increase the suction in the pipe 14. As shown in Fig. 3a the air pipe 27a may open at the centre of the choke 19a. A centrifugal or other rotary pump may be primed in the same manner, or, alternatively, a reciprocating pump as shown in Fig. 1 may be employed for priming a centrifugal pump. Several pumps may be connected to a single container 2, one pump only being provided with a priming pipe 14. As shown in Fig. 3b, liquid passes from the supply tank 2 to the intake pipe 24b of a pump 23b through perforations 19b in an outer tube 24b<1>. Air is withdrawn from the upper part of the tank 2 by a tube 28b. In a semi-rotary pump, Fig. 4, air is asperated from the upper part of a tank 2 through a pipe 37. The latter opens into the suction ports 35 which form the pressure-reducing restrictions. The tank 2 may be replaced by a bend in the suction pipe forming a reservoir.
