CORPORATION OF VIRGINIA.
PUMP.
Original application filed August 10, 1921, Serial No. 491,098. Divided and this application filed May 15,
- 1922. Serial No. 639,071.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NnLsoN E. BRIGHAM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at South Hadley Falls, county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to improvementsin pumps.
It is the especial aim of the invention to provide an improved priming arrangement, so located in an outside removable cylinder head as to co-operate with a cylinder extension of a shape which will effectually prevent formation of air pockets and also provide an opening leading directly into the pulsation chamber, whereby the latter may be easily filled with liquid previous to starting the pump.
For a full understanding of the invention,
a detailed description of a preferred embodiwith the accompanying drawing, and the novel features thereof then be specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, the figure is a partial vertical central section longitudinally ofthe pump plunger. I
Referring now to the drawing, the pump construction, so far as it relates to the present invention, consists of a cylinder casting A, pump plunger B, suction and discharge valves C, D, respectively, discharge air chamber E and pulsation chamber F. The plunger may be reciprocated by mechanism such as shown in application Serial No. 491,098, filed August 10, 1921, ofwhich this application is a division.
The priming means and suction air chamber are all located in the cylinder head G, which is preferably and as shown formed in one piece so as to be readily removable from the pump frame A, thus permitting ready access to the pump valves, and also sim plifying and reducing the cost of manufacture of this part of the pump.
The priming arrangement shown consists of a priming basin 1, preferably and as shown formed on the cylinder head, such basin having an opening 2 in the bottom thereof normally closed by a plug 3, which ment thereof will now be given in connection tion chamber F, the shape and location of r such extension being preferably as shown and with its bottom slightly inclined to faciliate flow of the priming liquid, and having a flat top so as to prevent formation of air pockets. The suction air chamber H is in communication with the atmosphere through a passage 5 controlled by cock 6, the end of the passage being conveniently closedby a screw plug 7.
The operation of the device described above is as follows: Plug 3 in priming basin 1, having been removed and the cock 6 closed, priming liquid is supplied to the basin 1 until the pulsation chamber F is filled, which is indicated when the liquid level reaches any point in the basin. The plug 8 is then replaced in opening 2 and the pump started, and the cock 6 may be opened sufficiently to admit air after priming has been effected.
If desired, an air snifting nozzle, indicated generally at 8, connecting the priming basin 1 and passage 5, may be provided, for automatically supplying cushioning air to the air chamber and through the pump to the discharge air chamber, such air being automatically admitted to the suction air chamber when the liquid level in the priming basin has lowered sufliciently to expose the nozzle orifice to the atmosphere. The cock 6 in this operation of the device, of course, remains closed at all times, the liquid in the basin being drawn, during the priming operation, into the suction air chamber and then into the pump cylinder. This air snifting feature, however, forms no part of my invention.
It will be understood that various changes may be made in the features of construction above described and still be within the scope of the claims, and it will also be understood that the invention is not to be confined to use solely with pumps of the type shown, but may be applied to various other pump constructions and the like with equal advantage.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a pump cylinder, of a cylinder head removably secured to said cylinder and forming a suction air chamber,
ice
and a priming basincon said cylinder head.
2. The combination With ap'ump cylinder, of a cylinder head forming a suction air chamber, a priming basin formed on said cylinder head having'an opening for admitting priming liquid to the pump cylinder, and means for closing said opening, said basin and closing means being formed to avoid air pockets connecting with the cylinder.
3. The combination with a pump, of a priming basin provided with an opening for admitting priming liquid to the pump cylinder and means :for closing said opening, said basin and closing means being formed to avoid air pockets connecting with the pump cylinder.
A. The combination .withla pumpcylinder, of a removable cylinder head forming a suction air chamber, a priming basin formed on said cylinder head and having an opening "for admitting priming liquid to the pump cylinder, means "for closing said opening, and means for admitting air to the suction air chamber after priming.
5. A pump having a priming basin provided With an opening for admitting priming liquid to the pump cylinder, means for closing said opening, and means for admitting cushioning air to the pump :after priming.
In vtestimony whereof, I "have hereunto set my hand.
NELSON E. BRIGHAM.
