INILLIAM PENBERTHY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; THE AMERICAN TRUST AND SAVINGS BANK ADMINISTRATOR OF IVILLIAM PENBERTHY,
DECEASED.
STEAM-INJECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Demented May 29, 1906.
To azz whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PENBERTHY, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Injectors and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to reduce to a minimum frictional resistances ordinarily offered by the valves of steam-in jectors in the starting and restarting thereof, to simplify the construction and lessen the cost of manufacture, and to locate both the overflow-valves in such relation to the casing that they will be out of the way and allow of ready and easy access thereto.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a slightly-modified form of the arrangement shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line 4 4, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the casing 2, the steam-inlet opening 3, the water-inlet 4, the overflow-outlet branch, and 5 the delivery-outlet. The steam-inlet jet 6, the suction or lifting jet 7, and the combining and delivery tube 8 being of any preferred form of construction, further reference thereto is not necessary, all such parts being well known in the art. The primary or relief overflow-chamber 9, into which the suction or-lifting jet 7 discharges, is carried laterally to one side of casing 1that is, into a lateral extension 9" of such casing, which extension is formed with an outlet or relief opening 10 in an inner wall or diaphragm 12. The extension 9 is horizontally disposed, as-is also the injector itself, being of the horizontal type. This opening 10 is normally closed by a ball-valve 13, which is guided in its movements by the annular flange of a removable plug 14, screwed in the top of the lateral extension 9. The primary or relief overflow escaping through opening 10 preferably passes directly to the overflow-outlet branch 4; through a channel (see Fig. 2) without having to pass through the main overflowchamber 16, which receives the spill from the relief-port 17 ofthe combining-tube, such outlet branch 4 being, however, in transverse line with the overflow-chamber 16 and not with the primary overflow, thus reducing the weight and cost of manufacture. This main overflow-chamber 16 is also carried laterally to one side of casing 1that is, into the extension -9 and formed with an overflow-opening 18 in its horizontally-disposed wall or diaphragm 19, a ball-valve 20, guided by a plug 21, normally closing such outletopening. The plug 21,- like plug 14, is screwed into the top of the lateral extension. According to the construction shown in Fig. 3 the direct channel 15 is dispensed with and the preliminary overflow, which effects the unseating of ball-valve 13, enters the main overflow-chamber 16 and must unseat ballvalve 20 before it can find its escape to the atmosphere through the overflow-outlet 4 but as it is the object of my invention to reduce resistances to a minimum I prefer that the primary overflow should find access to the atmosphere without having to unseat the main overflow-valve 20, and hence the preferred arrangement shown in Fig. 2.
The operation of this class of injectors is so well understood in the art that nothing more than a brief reference thereto is necessary. As before stated, the injector is of the horizontal type. When steam is admitted through steam-inlet jet 6, it passes through the suction or lifting jet 7 and entering chamber 9 will pass into the lateral extension, unseat ball-valve l3, and escape to the atmosphere through the overflow-outlet 4, instantly creating a partial vacuum in the water-inlet chamber contiguous with the inletopening 3. In the formation of the column of Water and condensed steam the overflow from the combining and delivery tube will be through port 17 into the main overflowchamber 16 and thence into the lateral ex tension and to the overflow-outlet after unseating ball-valve 20. The column being established, both ball-valves will immediately resume their seats over their respective overflow-openings.
The advantages of my invention are apparent. It will be seen that by employing the two ball-valves in a horizontal lnjector the o eration thereof is greatly facilitated, enabling the starting and restarting to be quickly accomplished. This is especially true by reason of the fact that the primary overflow may find immediate access to the 1 atmosphere without having to pass through the main overflow-chamber. Then, too, by mounting both valves in the lateral extension the guiding-plugs may be readily removed when for any purpose access to the valves is desired. Furthermore, I avoid the objection common to so many injectors of having raised plugs or branches extending from different points of the injector-casing, since according to my invention the valves occu y but very little room and are located in a ateral extension which is out of the way and to one side of the main casing of the injector.
I claim as my invention- 1. In-a horizontal steam-injector, the cas' ing having at one side a lateral extension and a primary overflow-chamber extended into said extension, said extension having an inner wall or diaphragm above said chamber formed with an outlet-opening, the main.
overflow-chamber also extended into said extension, which latter has an outlet-opening for the main overflow, loosely-mounted ballvalves normally fitted overboth of said outlet-openings, and a channel or passage-way leading from the outlet-opening of the primary overflow to one side of the opening of the main overflow.
2. In a horizontal steam-injector, a casing having at one side a lateral extension, and a primary overflow chamber extended into said extension, said extension having an inner wall or diaphragm above said chamber formed with an outlet-openin'g, the main overflow-chamber also extended into said extension, which latter has an outlet-opening for the main overflow, loosely-mounted ballvalves normally fitted over both of said outlet-openings, the overflow-outlet. branch in transverse line with the main overflow, and a channel leading from said primary overflowoutlet directly to the main overflow branch.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM PENBERTHY.
