[Class 103 (i)] Drum brake mechanism, which is of the type in which a shoe is supported so as to be pivoted at one end, circumferential displacement of the shoe being prevented, and which is also of the type in which a sliding movement of the heel end of the shoe allows of adjustment of the shoe towards the drum by a force produced during brake operation, includes means for preventing return of the heel end of the shoe from the position to which the force adjusts it. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 both shoes are mounted on a pin 11 secured to the back plate 2, free pivoting of the shoes taking place about a member 17, which is slotted so as to be capable of sliding over flattened surfaces 16 of the pin 11 and is frictionally restrained from return movement by a spring-pressed washer 20 serving to hold member 17 against an annular shoulder 14 of the pin 11. In a modification only one of the shoes is capable of movement towards the drum. In a second construction shown in Fig. 7 the shoes 43, 45 are mounted on separate square pins 40, 41 by bearing members 42, 44 and the pins can slide. on the back plate 33, both of the pins being restrained against return movement by the ends of a leaf spring 48. In a third construction, Fig. 7, both shoes are mounted on a single square pin 52 by means of bearing members, 53, 54, the pin being slidably mounted in a supporting plate and frictionally restrained by springs 59 bearing on a plate 61 in contact with a side of the pin 52.
