[Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Group II] A washing and drying machine in which both operations are effected in a single receptacle and having the construction described generally in Specification 538,243 wherein the receptacle is imperforate except around its upper part and is rotated for drying the clothes and has an agitator therein which is oscillated for washing, an annular trough being provided below the receptacle and above a chamber formed by the bottom of the casing, has the casing made in cylindrical sections with provision for securing these together, and the trough is provided with depending vanes for preventing surging of the liquid in the lower part of the casing. The arrangement facilitates the use of enamelled metal for the casing. Fig. 1 shows the machine generally. The trough 23 is integral with the upper part 20 of the casing and provides a shoulder 21 to rest in a shaped rubber packing ring 22 engaging the lower part 11 of the casing the integral bottom 12 of which provides a shoulder 14 resting on another packing ring 15 resting on a skirt 8 surrounding the motor and gear box 5 and supporting them through brackets 10 and a ring 9. The sections and skirt are held together by elongated hollow clamping pieces 31 secured by screws 32 to the upper section and to the skirt by bolts 34 engaging brackets 36 secured to, or a shoulder formed on, the skirt and flanges 37 on the clamps. In a modification dispensing with elongated clamping pieces the annular trough is separate and flanged to engage between internal flanges on the upper and lower sections of the casing, the whole of the flanges with packing rings being secured by bolts and outer rings being provided around this joint and also around the shouldered connection of the lower section and the skirt. Plates or vanes 29 with depressions 30 for stiffening are secured below the annular trough to oppose surging of liquid in the lower part of the casing.
