Class 138 (2) In a washing machine comprising an outer bowl 1 containing a clothes basket 2 which may be oscillated or rotated, the basket 2 has provided or formed within it a division 6 which extends diametrically without interruption across the basket so as to divide the bottom of the basket into two substantially semi-circular compartments, the division 6 extending upwardly to such a height that the washing liquid can surge over it on each reciprocation of the basket. The division 6 preferably has a rounded top 9 and sloping sides which are curved as at 8. In domestic machines the division is preferably about one third the height of the basket 2, while in larger machines for commercial use the division is about half the basket height. The basket 2 is supported, on a plate 7 which is secured to a driving shaft 3 and provided with studs 11 fitting into holes in the bottom of the basket. The basket is rotated rapidly in one direction for spin drying.
