Abstract

538,210. Coating iron and steel. STEVENS, A. H. (Heatbath Corporation). March 2, 1940, No. 3954. [A Specification was laid open to ,inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 18, 1940.] [Class 82 (ii)] The surfaces of ferrous metal articles are oxidized by immersing the articles in a solution of sodium or potassium nitrate and hydroxide in the proportion of one part of nitrate to two of hydroxide, the treatment being conducted in successive stages. The concentration of the salts in the first stage is such that the solution boils at a temperature from 20‹ F. to 25‹ F. lower than in the second stage, the boiling points in the stages being kept constant by dilution. The boiling point in the first stage is about 285 ‹F. and in the second stage about 310‹ F.
