Abstract
In the manufacture of wrought iron by the Aston process, molten refined ferrous material, preferably at a temperature of 2,800-2,900 degrees F. is admixed with molten slag at a temperature of 2,475-2,550 degrees F. to form a wrought iron sponge ball, whose greatest transverse dimension is not greater than twice its thickness, a portion of the slag then being expelled from the ball.
