Abstract

A composition for coating ferrous articles with a divalent metal comprises an acid aqueous solution of a divalent metal salt of an aliphatic polybasic hydroxy acid, a solubilising agent adapted to form a soluble complex with the ions of the divalent metal and, as an agent effective to precipitate ferric iron upon solution, at least one alkali metal or ammonium fluoride or bi-fluoride. Coating is effected, and the constituents of the solution other than those required to precipitate ferric iron are, as described in Specification 747,733 for coating with lead; baths containing Cu, Ni, Co and Cd are however, also referred to. To precipitate ferric iron, bi-fluorides are preferred, lead oxide being added to the solution as the lead iron concentration is reduced. The iron may be oxidised to the ferric state by molecular or nascent oxygen or by the addition of alkali metal or ammonium nitrates or nitrites.
