536,847. Lifeguards for vehicles. LINN, W. H. Jan. 17, 1940, No. 1016. [Class 103 (ii)] A lifeguard for motor vehicles comprises wheel guards 2 mounted on the wheel hubs so as to be free to turn about the wheel axes and normally covering the upper half of each wheel, a bumper bar 1 mounted on the lower part of the guards 2 so as normally to be disposed at about the level of the wheel axle and a curtain 10 of for example, chain mail extending between the bar 1 and the lower part of the radiator. The connection of the bar 1 with the guards 2 includes vertical pivots 14 and also transverse horizontal pivots, the latter pivots permitting rearward movement of the bar 1 when it is struck so that it moves slidable bars 4 against the action of springs 5. The movement of the bars 4 disengages catches which normally hold spring urged bolts 7 in engagement with the guards 2. The disengagement of the bolts 7 permits the guards 2 to turn about the wheel hubs, to a position in which the bar 1 is close to the ground, with the curtain 10 extending upwardly to close the gap between the bar and the radiator.
