Abstract

225,278. Ratcliff, W. D. Aug. 27, 1923. Wheel-guards. - A vehicle wheelguard comprises a main guard H, pivoted at K<2> to a frame A, and depending downwardly in front of the wheel to a point at such distance from the ground as to allow normal road clearance, the said main guard being in operative engagement by pawl release mechanism 0 with a supplementary guard member L pivoted to the frame at I and adapted to close the clearance gap when the main guard H is struck. The supplementary guard L is provided on its lower edge with a rubber strip L<2> and is held in the horizontal or vertical position by pawls M and R, Fig. 2, respectively engaging recesses in the hub L<4>. When the guard H is struck the spring-controlled pin 0 is forced inwardly to disengage the pawl M from the hub L<4> and allow the supplementary guard L t'o drop into a vertical position where it is retained by the pawl R.
