Wheel-guards and safety appliances.-A lifeguard for motor-vehicles comprises a centralfront guard and two wheel-guards S, Fig. 3, each of which is slidingly supported on a pair of bolts E, Fig. 2, projecting laterally from a supporting frame A, the wheel-guards being adapted to be displaced outwardly by means of springs E<1> surrounding the bolts when the front guard is struck by an obstacle. Each wheel-guard is provided at its rear with recesses E fitted with guide-rollers L to receive the bolts E and at its inner edge with a C-shaped ring J adapted to engage the projecting nose Q of a releasing-pin O, Fig. 4, and thereby retain the guard in its inward or normal position. The releasing-pin 0 is of T- shape and slides within a casing N attached to the frame A, and is normally held with the nose Q projecting forwardly into the ring J against the action of a release-spring P<1> by a wire R maintained taut by connection to a strong but resilient part H of the front guard, Fig. 1. When an obstacle is encountered the spring part H is compressed, the wire R slackened, and the spring P<1> permitted to actuate the. pin 0 to release the wheel-guards. The front guard is preferably of V-shape and supported on the frame A by means of hooks F engaging slots B on the supporting frame.
