809,624. Wheel guards for vehicles. FIUME, F. Nov. 7, 1956 [Nov. 9, 1955], No. 34037/56. Class 103(2) A device for fitting to a vehicle to reduce injuries caused to pedestrians run down by the vehicle, comprises a plate 1, Figs. 1 and 4, substantially L-shaped in cross-section and having an elongated opening 10 in one arm 3 and a member, e.g. a bolt 13 passing freely through the opening 10, the device being arranged to be attached by the member 13 to the vehicle (preferably to the front 2) in such a way that the other arm 4 of the plate 1 is substantially horizontal and is disposed adjacent the surface on which the vehicle wheels run, and the opening 10 is disposed vertically so that the plate 1 is free to move upwards and downwards on the member 13. The device may be formed by bending steel plate or comprise a frame supporting a metal fabric cover from steel strips (Fig. 10, not shown). As shown in Fig. 4, the arm 3 has an ear 9 at each end provided with an aperture 10 and the bolts 13 secured to the vehicle have winged heads 14. Each bolt 13 passes through an eye in a leaf spring 11 secured at 12 to the arm 3. When the device encounters a bump it is raised against the action of the springs 11. Similarly if the vehicle has pneumatic tyres the device can be deflected upwards in event of a puncture. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown) the springs 11 are dispensed with and the attaching members are studs fixed to the vehicle and having winged nuts. The device then lowers itself, relative to the attaching members, by gravity.
