Abstract

Obstruction removers.-A life-saving device for the front of motor-vehicles comprises a horizontal member 1 resiliently supported in the horizontal direction by studs 5 slidable in a member 6 on the vehicle, the outer edge of the member 1 being grooved to receive flexible, vertical edgings 3, which may be constructed similarly to the jointed slats of a roll-top desk, each edging being adapted to be wound on a roller 15 mounted on a bracket 9 on the vehicle, against the tension of a spring 8 on the opposite side of the vehicle and connected by a wire 12 to the free end of the edging. The edging 3 is maintained wound on the roller 15 by a pawl 16 on the member 1 engaging a ratchet wheel on the roller so that if the guard is pushed rearwardly the roller 15 is released and the edgings 3 pulled round the grooves by the springs 8. The edgings 3 are set by hand by disengaging the pawl 16 and rolling up the edgings by means of pins 13.
