Abstract

534,468. Discharge lamps. REIN, A. Aug. 5, 1939, No. 22763. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] For viewing objects by infra-red light a gas is employed which has been so activated by an electric discharge that when the atoms absorb energy of a low frequency they radiate it at a higher. For this purpose mercury vapour is employed at a pressure of about “ mm. It is contained in a tube 1 fitted with an anode 2, an indirectly heated cathode 3 and a grid 4, the anode being about two volts positive to the cathode and the grid about 7. The grid is about 1 mm from the cathode: and the anode about 40. The tube: is enclosed in an asbestos-lined casing maintained at 140‹ F, provided with an aperture covered with an infra-red filter and a viewing aperture.
