Abstract

485,787. Metallic - vapour lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOU STON CO., Ltd., and MILNER, C. J. Feb. 17, 1937, No. 4780. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge lamp comprises an inner envelope A having electrodes E mounted therein and containing a volatile metal having its resonance radiation in the spectral region in which silver shows selective transmission (i.e. 3050-3300Š) and an outer envelope C surrounding the inner one, one or both of the envelopes or a glass heat shield B mounted between the envelopes having thereon, so as to intercept radiations proceeding from the discharge, a silver coating of sufficient thickness to absorb the major portion of the visible radiations. Suitable fillings are cadmium and zinc, resonating at 3260Š and 3076A respectively. In the postive column cadmium lamp shown, the U - tube A is supported from the envelope by a silvered mica disc M and from the shield B by a support S. The shield, coated with silver, is supported by spacing members S and a support W of the type shown in Specification 434,720. The starting gas is neon. A negative glow lamp may also be used. The almost pure ultra-violet radiation transmitted bythe silver film may be converted into visible light by fluorescent material placed, for example, on the inside of envelope C, or it may be used for medical or other purposes.
