[Class 55 (i)] In a continuously - operating externally heated vertical retort for the production of synthesis gas from solid fuel, a gas-collecting space 1 is provided at the junction of the pre-heating and carbonizing zones with gas inlet openings 2 from the interior of the retort into the collecting space from which a duct or ducts 3 lead at 4 into the retort in the region of the lower boundary of the carbonizing zone. The ducts 3 may be situated in an end wall of the retort. In Figs. 7 and 8, the collecting space 1 is formed in a central wall 10 through which the ducts 3 pass and lead into opening 4, the passage of the gases being regulated by dampers 11 accessible through openings in the end walls. These outlets may be at different levels such as 4, 4a. In Fig. 11, fuel from the pre-heating zone 14 passes downwards through the retort, and gases from the collecting space 1 pass downwards through a duct 3 in a central wall 8 to outlets 4, the wall being extended downwards at 16 as far as the gas outlet 15.
