Abstract
530,199. Arc-rupturing in switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 30, 1939, No. ,19045. Convention date, July 1, 1938. [Class 38 (v)] An arc-extinguishing structure of the deion " type employs insulating plates, preferably of the non-gas evolving type, which are provided with aligned slots 45 tapering upwards, in which the arc is drawn and blown upwards by magnetic plates 47 arranged in pairs as spacers between the insulating plates. In the group X, Fig. 2, the insulating plate 43 has a rounded cutaway edge to each side of the slot 45 so as to fit over the fixed contact. Fig. 1 (not shown). The next insulating plate 49 is shorter, so as to accommodate a cross-magnetic plate 51, whereas the next and following insulating plates 53 have smooth slot-edges as in Fig. 3. The structure is closed below by plates 79 and at the sides by plates 63, and bars 67 retain the cross-plates 51 in position. A front support 41 and cover 71 are provided. as also a back plate 39 suitably cut away at 77 registering with a support on the switch base (not shown). The Specification gives suitable thicknesses for the various plates and suitable shapes for the slot-edges, and also specifies dimensions for the cross-section of the vents to atmosphere formed by the magnetic plates. Modifications in details are also described and illustrated, Figs. 6- 13 (not shown).
