[Class 138 (ii)] A washing and drying machine constructed with an outer casing, an inner bottomless bell and a fan for circulating air or water in the casing, the bell 'is resiliently supported on the base of the casing by springs or rubber blocks. As shown in Fig. 1 the bell 6 rests on springs 8 and its separate perforated upper part 16 is carried by the hinged cover 2 of the casing 1, the fan 4 for circulating air or water up through the bell and down around the bell being driven by a motor housed in a dome 3 on the cover. The motor and fan may, however, be mounted on the side of the casing and the fan connected by flexible pipes to suitable apertures in the cover. When used for drying, air which may be heated is supplied at position 13 and drawn away at position 14. In a modification, Fig.'4, the upper and lower parts 16, 6 or the bell are formed as shown at 26, 25 to provide an annular liquid seal, and for drying purposes the clothes are placed in a perforated drum 32 inserted in the bell and driven from the shaft 33 of a motor housed in a casing 27 and driving the fan 4, a coupling 29 on the shaft permitting lifting of the bell cover. In a modification of Fig. 4, the drum is not driven directly from the fan motor but is provided with peripheral helical blades and driven by the air circulated by the fan. The blades may be formed with ribs or connected to an outer cylinder almost contacting the bell and which may extend below into a water seal.
