Abstract

808,618. Washing-machines. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 13, 1957 [Dec. 5, 1956], No.35360/57. Class 138 (2). A washing-machine includes a tub 14, a vertically reciprocable agitator 18, filter boxes 20 mounted on the side walls of the tub, and a conduit 30 extending from the underside of the agitator to the underside of the filter element 56, the agitator being adapted to cause downward flow of liquid through the filter and conduit during its reciprocation. When the agitator 18 rises, the reduced pressure at 61 causes liquid to enter filter box 20 by way of apertures 50 and slots 52 and 54, and it flows from the box through conduit 30 to the base of the agitator, causing the water in the tub 14 to circulate, as shown by the arrows to the left of the tub. The tub may be rotated to spin-dry the clothes and the expelled water entering the filter-box 20 will tend to remove accumulated lint off the filter tines 60 and allow it to flow through apertures 16 into the outer casing 12 from which it is pumped to waste. The conduits 30 are formed by welding sheet-metal channel-members to the inside or outside of the tub.
