[Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Group II] A machine for washing and drying clothes comprises a hydro-extractor drum 18 adapted to be removably mounted in the cylindrical casing 1 of the machine and provided with a number of radial vanes 19 which are disposed internally around the rim of the drum and in line with the discharge from a centrifugal blower 5 mounted in the lid 2 of the casing for causing rotation of the drum. The blower 5, which is driven by an electric motor 3, is partly enclosed by a plate 7 which is secured to the lid 2 and provided with a central conical depending portion 8. For use in washing, a cylindrical drum 10 is inserted in the casing 1 (as shown in the right-hand side of the drawing), the drum being provided with a removable lid 11 bearing on its upper edge. During washing, an air current from the blower 5 passes through apertures in the portion 8, downwardly in the space between the drum 10 and casing 1, and upwardly through the interior of the drum for discharge through one or more openings 13 in the lid 11 ; an apertured deflector plate 24 may be mounted below a central opening 13 in the lid. When the machine is to be used for drying, water is drained off through a cock 14, and the drum 10 is replaced by the drum 18 (as shown in the right-hand side of the drawing), which is rotatably mounted on a bearing 17 provided at the upper end of a pillar 15 fitting into a loose tripod 16 placed on the base of the casing 1. The air current from the blower 5 then passes from the vanes, downwardly in the space between the drum 18 and casing 1 and upwardly into the drum through holes 21 in the inner wall 22 thereof ; alternatively, the air current after striking the vanes may pass either downwardly into the drum or both in this direction and into the space between the drum and casing. A wire-mesh screen may be provided on the inner side of the vanes to prevent clothing from contacting the latter. The drums 10, 18 are so dimensioned that, for storage, one may be inserted in the other within the casing 1. Specification 625,813 is referred to.
