[Class 38 (iv)] A carbon-pile regulator a connected in the field winding b of a dynamo is under the action of an armature d controlled jointly by a permanent magnet e with extensions i, f to produce a permanent loading of the pile and by a winding g responsive to the dynamo voltage or current or both and providing a flux opposing that of the permanent magnet and in consequence, relieving the loading of the pile. An additional winding j carrying the field current or a fraction of it may produce a flux aiding the permanent magnet flux and a shunt u may be connected as shown to minimize hunting. The shunt path k safeguards the permanent magnet against undue demagnetizing action by the electromagnet. The spring s opposes the attractive force on the armature.
