[Class 38 (iv)] Electromotive force.-In a regulating system for a variable speed dynamo a a carbon pile c is arranged to be short-circuited or inserted in the circuit of the field b under control of contacts e, operated by an electromagnet d provided with a voltage coil g and a bucking coil h the pile c being compressed by magnetic or spring means j and being extended by means of a member operated by an electromagnet k provided with opposed windings n, o which are connected respectively in parallel with the armature a or a battery supplied therefrom and in parallel or series with the field winding b. Energization of the coil u may be controlled by associating therewith a variable resistance such as part of the pile c or a separate carbon pile.
