Abstract
527,492. Bombs; fuzes. NELLES, L. H. March 4, 1939, No. 7194. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] In an aerial bomb having in the nose a combustible time fuze for firing the main explosive charge, igniting and percussion devices being respectively associated with said time fuze and with the main charge and controlled by an airdriven spindle, the spindle co-operates at two axially spaced points, respectively, in a releasable holding manner with displaceable members of said igniting and percussion devices, to release the former and render the latter effective after a predetermined number of rotations of the spindle. The shaft 9 of a propeller A passes through a chamber 5 and into a chamber 6 both formed in the nose of the bomb. An enlarged screw-threaded portion 11 of the shaft engages an internally threaded holder 12 of a fuzeigniting cap 12<SP>1</SP> within the chamber 5 and a similar threaded portion of the shaft within the chamber 6 engages an internally-threaded block 16. A time fuze 8 extends from the chamber 5 through a fixed ring 3 and a rotatable ring 4 to ' communicate with the main charge. When the bomb is released, the propeller turns the shaft 9 thus causing the members 12, 16 to move axially till they are free from the threaded portions of the shaft. A spring 13 then drives the cap 12<SP>1</SP> on to the firing pins 19 thus igniting the time fuze 8. If, meanwhile, the bomb strikes an objective, the block 17 carrying a percussion cap 17<SP>1</SP> will be thrown on to a firing pin 14 at the end of the shaft 9 to fire the main charge. The bomb is supported beneath the aircraft by saddle members 21 and may be released by withdrawing a pin which passes through an eye 25 in the bomb and through a suspension strap 26. A member a prevents rotation of the propeller before release. The fuze ring 4 may be adjusted from the aircraft by means of a rack 29 meshing with teeth on the ring.
